This almost 4 meter long salmon was constructed from sustainable materials over the course of two weeks at The Place in Newport. Using willow as a bio-degradable base, a skeleton structure supports decorative scales built from plastic casings and discarded CDs. A salmon papper puppet making workshop was also held, allowing members of the community to join the shoal.

Once complete, the salmon swam through the streets of Newport, guiding a group of smaller salmon down to the Riverfront Theatre. The performance lasted for an hour, and was supported by Alistair Still providing narration and audio description throughout.

The Overall Process

I used a variety of skills such as willow weaving, sewing, lashing and working with reclaimed materials. The salmon puppet provided an interesting challange in the form of being built entirely sustainably, opting for re-usable cable ties and a lack of paint.

The latter half of the project was partly spent rehersing in the streets of Newport, with Apple, Lara and myself taking on the roles of head, body and tail respectively. Multiple sessions allowed us to experiement and practice with the puppet to lean how it moves, and exploring ways it could dive and jump throughout it's journey.
